ASNT Standards

Standards and Recommended Practices developed by ASNT define qualification and certification for NDT personnel. Through ASNT committees, we facilitate top NDT experts and business professionals in developing and defining personnel qualifications that support industries and governments needs worldwide. 

ASNT does not publish standards that describe how to perform NDT tasks; those are published by ASTM International and other organizations standards that affect NDT users and are highlighted in Codes and Standards Bodies Involved in NDT Industry.   

Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A
Personnel Qualification and Certification in Nondestructive Testing

 Provides guidelines that can be used by companies to develop employer-based** in-house NDT and PdM certification programs. Included are recommended skill levels for all levels of NDT qualification, the recommended training and experience hours for Level I and Level II personnel, and the examination eligibility requirements for  Level III personnel. These guidelines can be modified by employers and, when incorporated into a company’s Written Practice, become the NDT certification requirements for that company. The first edition of SNT-TC-1A was published in 1966, and it provided the general format for the development of almost all other NDT certification standards in use today. ANSI/ASNT CP-189
ASNT Standard for Qualification and Certification of Nondestructive Testing Personnel

 This employer-based standard establishes the minimum requirements for the qualification and certification of nondestructive testing (NDT) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM) personnel. An American National Standard (ANS), CP-189 provides requirements as opposed to the guidelines of SNT-TC-1A.   A collection of inquiries regarding various provisions of CP-189 and the responses from the ASNT Standard Development Committee's Interpretation Subcommittee can be accessed here. ANSI/ASNT CP-105
ASNT Standard Topical Outlines for Qualification of Nondestructive Testing Personnel

 This standard provides training outlines for Level I and Level II personnel and topical outlines for the qualification of Level III NDT personnel and details the minimum training course content for those personnel. CP-105 is the compilation and updated revision of the Recommended Training Course Outlines formerly found in Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A and CP-189.
