One of the gaps in the knowledge of many NDT/CWI inspectors is an in-depth understanding of industrial radiography. Many inspectors fall short by thinking of it as X-ray only and know little about radioactive isotopes and gamma radiography, which is the method most often used in fieldwork. To shed light on the inner workings of this arcane discipline, our Guest Speaker this Wednesday will be Ron Hayden, an authority in this field.
- Ron first became involved with industrial radiography thirty-nine years ago in 1979 when he began his affiliation with Gamma Industries in Houston, a manufacturer of radioactive sources and NDT supplies.
- Interestingly, 1979 was also the year that Ron joined the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, so he is now a thirty-nine-year member of ASNT.
- He became the Gamma Industries Regional Sales Manager and was involved with their major NDT functions, which saw him traveling throughout the country.
- Because of a managerial change at Gamma Industries, Ron reemployed to Gulf Nuclear, another manufacturer of radiographic sources and NDT supplies.
- Subsequently, he became an NDT instructor and the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) at Baytown Technical School (BTS). It was here that Ron earned his ASNT Level III accreditations.
- Because of the closure of BTS, Ron became the Level III / Field Supervisor for MQS Inspection. During his tenure at MQS, he also became an adjunct faculty member at San Jacinto College, where he taught for over twenty years.
- MQS sold to Cooper Heat, then Chicago Bridge and Iron, then Praxair, so Ron decided to join PetroChem Inspection Services as their Level III, RSO, Safety Manager, Quality Assurance Manager, and technical trainer.
- PetroChem Inspection Services was purchased by TUV Sud, a German inspection company from which he retired after eleven years of service.
- During this period, Ron amazingly chiseled out enough time from his busy schedule to serve in the demanding position of Chairman of the Houston Section of the ASNT, the largest in the United States.
- In his retirement, Ron continued to do NDT consulting for TUV Sud for four years until moving to Dripping Springs, where he still does limited NDT consulting.
- Ron was also a United States Marine, and we appreciate him for his service in defending America.
On a personal note, I first learned about Ron when I took my NDT training at San Jacinto College. If you were in the NDT world, you could not have arrived in Houston for more than ten minutes without hearing about Ron Hayden, whose knowledge and experience in NDT is legendary. We are fortunate now to have him in our own backyard in Dripping Springs, where he serves on the Board of Directors of our Capitol of Texas Section of the ASNT.
Ron's presentation will be this coming Wednesday, March 7, 6:00pm, on the Riverside Campus of Austin Community College, Squires Building, Room 108.

DPS, Game Warden, University of Texas, Texas A & M and Government Officials. We got to see their repair shop and had a questions/answers with the members and the ACC Students of the Welding Inspections/Ultrasonic Testing Class.
